CENTRE Looking to build off a significant 38 percent reduction in energy consumption, Cherokee County Schools announced a three- year extension of its energy conservation program with Cenergistic. Since the program's official start in 2015, the school system has managed to save $1.3 million, cut its utility spending by one-third and create a culture of sustainability among students and staff. One of the most significant results of this program is a 46 percent reduction in natural gas use, greatly decreasing the district's greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, seven district buildings have performed well enough against their national peers to gain Energy Star certification. Another benefit of this program has been the application of and approval of two grants for LED lighting through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. With the first grant the remaining metal halide lights in the system at Sand Rock and Cherokee County Career Tech were retrofitted with LED lighting. With the approval of another grant this year, new LED lighting will be installed in Gaylesville High School.
